I roll over so I can nestle up to Vyker’s chest. It feels so nice to press my cheek against his soft, pliant, lavender scented….

Wait a minute. Soft, pliant, and lavender scented?

My eyes flutter open, and I see that I’m actually draped across Vyker’s extra long pillow. Where is he? I look about the room, but find myself alone.

Sliding out of bed, I pad naked down the steps to the ground floor. He’s not here, either, but his hover car is gone. He must have gone to work.

Why does it bother me so much that he’s gone? Am I that spoiled after only a few days of not having to wake up alone? My mind flashes back to the last time I lived with a man. He was a human named Reinhold.

Reinhold and I hooked up shortly after I arrived on Novaria with the other refugees. He was an investment broker, a man who shuffled money around for richer men, while making a more than modest living for himself. He was well off financially, devastatingly handsome, and he swept me off my feet by being super sweet and understanding—at first.

There’s a honeymoon period when you first start dating a guy and they say all the right things, do all the right things. I’m convinced this is a tactic to throw you off your guard and let them into your life, and your heart.

Because Reinhold—actually a lot of guys I’ve tried to be with—had a different side of his character that only came out once I accepted his offer to move in. Now, I don’t mind helping out with the housework, especially when I’m not being charged rent. But Reinhold started treating me like a servant. He just expected me to clean his house, launder his clothes, and empty the trash bins into the incinerator.

Not only that, but he became a total slob, just tossing things on the floor for me to pick up. When I complained about it, he would always snidely inform me that I was living on his dime, and I shouldn’t be upset that I have to pick up a little just to earn my keep.

Slowly, he stopped taking me places, and we just sat around his flat while he watched BBL. But oh, I’d better not deny him access to my body whenever and wherever he wanted it. One night I woke up to find him on a holo vid call with a barely dressed girl who was barely a legal adult, with his hand in his pants.

He threw me out when I went ballistic. Since I didn’t have a lease, I had to leave right away. That was when I wound up renting one third of a couch in a bad tenement in a worse neighborhood.

So even though Vyker is being all right for the moment, I know that once he feels secure enough he’ll start taking me for granted. It’s not entirely his fault. He’s a man, after all.

I sink to the sofa and draw my knees up to my chest, rocking slowly in an attempt to calm myself down.
